ACTA ZOOLÓGICA MEXICANA was created in 1955 by a group of scientists from the Escuela Nacional de Ciencias Biológicas of the Instituto Politécnico Nacional. By 1966 it was a publication of the Natural History Museum of the City of Mexico.

In 1984 the Instituto de Ecología A. C. took responsibility for editing and named ACTA ZOOLÓGICA MEXICANA (nueva serie).  From 1984-2014, 124 uninterrupted numbers, available in digital format on the journal’s homepage (, have been published.

From 2004 to celebrate its 20 years of life, the journal’s format was changed starting from that point with volume 20, each volume containing three issues per year which appear in April, August and December. In 2015 it is scheduled to make the switch to use the program Open Journal System (OJS) proposed by CONACYT for editorial use, so it will be doing tests throughout this year, after which notice will install the entire publishing community.
